A new feature introduced this week at Wichita First Church of the Nazarene will give members of our Deaf ministry access to sermons even when they’re unable to attend a worship service on a Sunday morning.

For the first time, sermons preached during the Sunday morning worship service will be available to view online with sign language interpretation included. Volunteers on our media team, led by ministry leader Gene Rankin, are using technology that allows video to be captured in a 180-degree, panoramic view. These videos will give online viewers the ability to see both the sign language interpretation and the worship, preaching and other activities taking place on the platform in one screen.

Sign language interpretation is offered at every Sunday morning worship service at Wichita First Church of the Nazarene, thanks to a team of volunteers who offer their interpreting services. Recording the services with this new camera angle allows for our existing ASL interpreting efforts to reach even more members of our Deaf community.

“Our purpose is to share the message of Christ with the world,” senior pastor Dr. Brent Van Hook said. “The creativity of the media team and the faithful work of sign language interpreters have made this innovative ministry possible. Perhaps there are people in our lives who would benefit from this new avenue of experiencing Christ together through our worship services.”

Videos will typically be available to view online within a few hours after the service’s completion. The church’s media team has been working on this new functionality for the past few weeks, making trial runs and perfecting the process, and that effort will continue as more sermons are recorded.

Live online streaming and archived sermons with the traditional three-camera view will also remain available. All videos are free and accessible to the public at firstnaz.wpengine.com and vimeo.com/wichitanazarene.
